Sean “Diddy” Combs appeared in federal court in New York City on Friday (14 March), pleading not guilty to an updated indictment accusing him of two decades of sex trafficking offences. The 55-year-old music mogul, visibly greyer since his September arrest, stood before Judge Arun Subramanian, acknowledging that he understood the charges.

Combs, who remains in custody without bail, embraced his lawyers and acknowledged family members before being escorted out by US marshals. Jury selection is set to begin in late April, with opening statements scheduled for 12 May.

Prosecutors allege that Combs exploited his power and status to intimidate, threaten, and lure women into abusive relationships, coercing them into commercial sex acts through violence, threats, and financial control. The indictment details instances of physical abuse, including an incident where Combs allegedly dangled a victim over a balcony.

A key issue in the trial will be a video aired by CNN, showing Combs assaulting former girlfriend Cassie in a hotel corridor. Prosecutors argue it is “critical evidence,” while defence lawyers claim it was manipulated to be misleading.

Additionally, prosecutors are withholding accuser identities due to safety concerns, stating that many are fearful of public exposure and scrutiny by the defence. As the high-profile case progresses, it is expected to bring intense legal battles over evidence and testimony.
